This iPad episode app is your guide on a special tour of Todaiji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Nara, Japan.
Todaiji was built in the 8th century and is home to two great structures: the Great Buddha Hall, one of the world’s largest wooden buildings; and the Great Buddha of Nara, the world’s largest bronze statue.
In this Todaiji episode, you will learn about how the Buddha was cast, the great treasures once kept in the treasure house called Shosoin, the spectacular New Year’s celebration of fire on Mt. Wakakusa behind Todaiji, the 1200 year old festival marking the arrival of spring called Omizutori, the ritual cleaning of the Great Buddha, the beautiful lantern festival held in late summer commemorating departed souls, and much more.
All of this presented in beautiful moving images shot by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK.
