「北北西に進路を取れ」を見たあとで、これは「三十九夜」と「海外特派員」とをつき混ぜたもので、新手は使っていないと友人の一人が言った。この印象は前半において正しいが後半において誤っている。「海外特派員」はジョエル・マクリーの新聞記者が、白昼の殺人を目撃し、事件の謎を解くためアメリカからオランダまで行くように、一地点から地理的に主人公と事件が移行していくコンストラクションの点で「三十九夜」のヴァリエーションなのである。
